How are you involved in sports?
KYLA: Can I say sports are my life? I’m a beer league hockey goalie, a business owner building a platform for women in sports, a sports fan, and my ultimate goal is to encourage and help women take their shot in sports
How did your love for sports start and continue to where you are today?
KYLA: When I was four years old, I stepped on the ice and fell in love with hockey. Over the years, it became so much more to me than a game: It became a community, an escape, and a piece of my identity. Through various times in my life, sports were there for me when I needed them most. I was never destined for the big leagues, but I was destined to ensure as many girls and women as possible experience the power of sport in all facets, which led me to creating her Soul Shot.
What’s the greatest lesson(s) you’ve learned through sports?
KYLA: Sports have taught me the power in being me. I questioned myself and who I was for so long, but through sports I’ve learned what I’m capable of and what I have to offer the world. Sports have allowed me to discover who I am, challenge myself, and believe in the power within me.
I think it’s important that people, especially girls and women, know that the power of sports is there at every level and every role. You don’t have to be an elite athlete or make it pro for sports to be meaningful and powerful. However you choose to be involved in sports is important.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you’d give to other girls and women in sports?
KYLA: You are exactly who you’re meant to be. Being you and embracing your passions is the greatest gift you can give to the world. Not everyone will understand it or support it, but as long as it sets your soul on fire, it’s where you belong and no one can take that away from you. Always take your shot.
What do you want those who drink this beer to know about women in sports?
KYLA: We belong. At all levels, in all areas, in all roles – women belong in sports. And we aren’t going anywhere.
I wanted to make this beer and feature badass women in sports on the label because women in sports deserve it. They work so incredibly hard and are so passionate and are so often overlooked. Whether women are drinking beers with their teammates after a game, out at a bar cheering on their favourite team, or cracking open a cold one after crushing it at work all day—women deserve to be represented in spaces we often only see men. It’s our time.
