How are you involved in sportS?
KIERA: I am a personal trainer and high performance coach. I train athletes of all ages and skill levels from junior and high school, college and university to professionals. This past summer I was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Stingers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. I was the first female coach within The Stingers organization and the first to win a CEBL Championship.
I grew up in a very small town and had the luxury of playing as many sports as I could. Fastball, baseball, hockey, track and field, badminton, cross-country etc. but basketball was my sport of choice. I played post secondary for the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
I have played, coached, trained and been a spectator most of my life.
How did your love for sports start and continue to where you are today?
KIERA: My family was very involved in sport, both my parents and my brother have played and coached since I can remember. I grew up on baseball diamonds, in arenas and in school gymnasiums and fell in love with sports and competing. My love for sport has been an instrumental guide in my decision making both personally and professionally. I chose to be a trainer because I love the athletic environment that allows me to work and I am able to share what I am most experienced at; being an athlete.
What’s the biggest lesson(s) you’ve learned through sports?
KIERA: I have learned so many big things through sport that it feels impossible to choose just one but this is one of my favourite quotes that summarizes many important things that sport has taught me:
“The ability to conquer one’s self is no doubt the most precious of all things that sport bestows.” – Olga Kurbot
What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to other girls and women in sports?
KIERA: Be passionate about what you do and surround yourself with others who feel the same. Learn to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, do hard things so life becomes easier – confidence will take you everywhere. Be accountable for your actions and responsible for the outcomes. Find things you love to do and build your life around them. Be kind.
What do you want those who drink this beer to know about women in sports?
KIERA: Girls who play sports become women who lead. When women lead we all benefit.
