As an avid reader of books and supporter of Black authors, these are just a few of my personal favorites that will surely make you a fan of these writers after you read these incredible stories.
This list will get you started, but it’s up to you to actively seek out stories written by Black and BIPOC authors.
1. Such a fun age by Kiley Reid
A babysitter of a well-to-do couple gets cornered at a local grocery store when a nosy customer asks her why she is with a white child. Through the perspectives of the babysitter and her employer, this book is timely as it explores racial profiling, micro aggressions and addresses interracial dating.

2. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
A young girl begins to see the world differently after she is a witness to her unarmed friend’s shooting by a white police officer. Through this tragic experience, she learns to find her voice and what it means to fight for what you believe in.

3. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
A beautiful story written in verse, spins a story of a young girl, Xiomara, growing up in New York City with a super religious mother. Desperate for an escape and an outlet to channel her emotions, Xiomara finds slam poetry.

4. Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour
Unlike anything you will ever experience, Black Buck will take you on a wild ride you didn’t know you wanted to be on. Intense, funny, thought provoking and witty, this is one you won’t be able to put down.

5. The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon
We all need a good Rom Com these days and this one will surely sweep you off your feet. Samiah is sick of dating men who are constantly playing games but, as she begins to focus on creating her app, she meets a gorgeous distraction one day at work. The Boyfriend Project is a good time best paired with your fave cocktail and a snack; you’ll want to read it cover to cover.
